Literacy South
Literacy South Inspired by the belief that illiteracy and poverty go hand in hand, this model organization provides a simple but important service: Its staff trains people from poverty organizations to go back to their agencies and teach volunteer literacy instructors who then staff organized reading classes. Organized by Fingeret and McCullough, both of whom boast considerable experience in teaching and literacy training, the program focuses on using relevant reading materials that grab the attention of adults, including community organizing information and news. They produce first-rate reading materials that meet those ends, and they have worked with organizations not only in North Carolina but throughout the Southeast.
All the feature stories on @GRASS-ROOTS.ORG's pages are reported and written by Robin Garr, a prize-winning journalist who has visited more than 500 innovative grassroots programs in all 50 states since 1990.
